What We Believe
Western Heights Baptist Church is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention. The Baptist Faith and Message is a detailed explanation of the biblical beliefs held by Southern Baptists. Our Pastors and Elders are always available to answer any questions you might have about these statements.
Each statement given is followed by scripture references you can use to help you understand each of these foundational beliefs.
These statements are based on the Baptist Faith and Message and have been approved and affirmed by the Elders of Western Heights Baptist Church.
We believe that God is Sovereign; He is the creator and ruler of the universe; He is all-knowing, all powerful and transcends all time.
(Deuteronomy 4:38, Psalm 83:18, 93:1, Acts 17:24,25)
We believe Jesus Christ is the only Son of the living God who came to this earth in human form. We believe He was born of a virgin through the miraculous power of the Holy Spirit.
We believe that all people are born with a sin nature (Romans 3:23) and the death of Christ on the cross atones for the sins of all humanity.
(Isaiah 53:3-6; 2 Corinthians 5:21)
We believe that Jesus literally and bodily resurrected from the dead as prophesied.
(I Corinthians 15:1-4) and He will bodily return to as promised. (John 14:1-6, 2 Peter 3:3,4,10,13)
We believe that all people will be given a place in heaven or in hell at the time of their death or at the time of Christ’s return.
(Hebrews 9: 27, 2 Corinthians 5: 6-10, Revelation 20:15)
We believe that forgiveness of sins and the gift of eternal life are promised to those who trust in Jesus as their Savior and Lord. Those who trust in Christ are called to repent of their sins, declare faith in Christ, and be baptized.
We do not practice infant baptism. We baptize only by immersion.
We ask any believer who has not been immersed to be baptized according to the New Testament form before becoming a member of Western Heights.
(Romans 10:9, Acts 2:38, Romans 6: 3,4)
About the Holy Spirit
We believe those who receive Christ and are obedient to Him in baptism also receive the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit who empowers them with spiritual gifts for ministry, comfort and character.
About the Bible
We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God. It is the written record of His supernatural revelation of Himself to man. It is absolute in its authority, complete in its revelation, final in its content and without any error in its teaching.
We believe each believer should give a generous, intentional, regular and proportional gift of their income to God through the local church as a spiritual discipline.
(Malachi 3: 10, I Corinthians 16: 2, 3; 2 Corinthians 9: 6,7)
We believe prayer is a spiritual discipline that should be practiced, taught and learned within the Body of Christ.
(Acts 1: 14; Colossians 4:2; I John 5: 14, 15)
About Other Churches
We believe as Baptists we voluntarily join other churches to support missions, but we know and believe we are not the only Christians; the church should seek unity among believers in essential matters of the Christian faith. We believe that the local church is an autonomous body which cooperates with many Christian agencies, but is regulated by none.
(John 10:14-16, Ephesians 4:2-6, Ephesians 5:2b)
We believe the mission of the church is to reach the spiritually lost for Christ; to teach with a goal of becoming more like Christ and then to work together to accomplish God’s purposes in the world.
We believe in the sanctity of marriage between one man and one woman.
(Genesis 2:24, Isaiah 62:5, Matthew 19:4-6)
About Attitude and Posture toward the World
We believe that love is to be shown to all people as the central trait of the Christian faith.
(John 13:35, I Peter 4:8)
